講題1:The Nobel Prize Factory: The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology
諾貝爾獎得主製造工廠:英國劍橋MRC分子生物學實驗室

The Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology (fondly called LMB) located in Cambridge (UK), is one of the birthplaces of modern molecular biology. LMB is one of the most successful research laboratories in the world. Work of LMB scientist has been awarded 10 Nobel Prizes shared amongst 16 LMB scientists (the latest in Chemistry in 2013). These prizes celebrate advances in primary scientific research and for the development of pioneering techniques for molecular biology, including DNA sequencing and methods for determining 3D structures of proteins. Additionally 8 scientists who spent time at LMB as graduate students, post-docs., or visiting scientists have been awarded the Nobel Prize.
位於英國劍橋的醫學研究委員會(Medical Research Council; MRC)分子生物學實驗室(暱稱為LMB; Laboratory of Molecular Biology),是當代分子生物學的發祥地之一。放眼世界,LMB也是一個擁有非常傑出研究成果的實驗室。至今為止,16位LMB的研究人員基於不同領域上的科學發現,已累計榮獲10次的諾貝爾獎,其中2013諾貝爾化學獎為最近一次獲獎。這些傑出的研究對於基礎科學研究的進展,以及前瞻技術的開發卓有貢獻,例如基因序列,蛋白質結構的鑑定等成果。此外,在眾多諾貝爾獎得主中,亦有8位獲獎者都曾在LMB以研究生、博士後研究員或是客座科學家的身分參與研究。
藉由此次的演講,我將替各位闡述有哪些因素造就了這些諾貝爾獎得主;是甚麼原因使得LMB能夠如此成功,以及在什麼樣的研究環境下才能夠產生出如此卓越的創造力。

講題2:A Life in Structural Biology 倘佯於結構生物學的生活 |
I will describe my career in science as a female and what made me a scientist. I will then give a brief overview of the importance of structural biology in medicine. Structural biology is used to reveal the three-dimensional structure of proteins to understand the molecular mechanisms of a biological process. I will illustrate my lecture with examples from my own research including a couple of specific examples of how three-dimensional structural information played a role in understanding human genetic disorders.
In my lecture I will attempt to answer the questions: Why did I chose to become a scientist? How did I fall in love with science? Why is structural biology important?
我將介紹自己身為一位女性科學家的生涯歷程,以及是什麼讓我成為一個科學家。接著我會簡要的介紹結構生物學在醫學上的重要性。結構生物學主要是探討蛋白質的三維結構,藉此讓我們了解生物過程的分子機制。在演講中,我將以自己的研究作為說明,包跨數個實例闡述生物分子的三維結構訊息如何協助我們理解人類遺傳性疾病。
在我的演講中,我會嘗試回答下列幾個問題:為什麼我選擇成為一個科學家?我是如何愛上科學研究?為什麼結構生物學是如此重要?
