Glycosylation: from Understanding to Innovation 醣化反應: 從瞭解至創新 |
Carbohydrates are one of the three major biological molecules, but have been poorly understood because of the lack of tools and methods. Biological glycosylation is an important and general reaction, influencing the structure and function of biological molecules, such as proteins, lipids and natural products, and is the most complex posttranslational modification. This lecture will describe my motivation to enter the field of glycoscience, first driven by curiosity followed by the desire to understand carbohydrate chemistry and to develop chemical and enzymatic methods as well as new tools to study the effect of glycosylation on the functions of proteins. It will also cover our development of molecular probes and glycan arrays for the identification and differentiation of glycans on the surface of normal and disease cells and the development of new vaccines and medicines for the treatment of cancer and infectious disease.
醣分子是生物三大分子之一,但甚少被瞭解,主要是缺乏工具與方法。生物分子之醣化反應是一重要而普遍的反應,會影響到生物分子如蛋白質、脂質及天然物之結構與功能,也是後轉譯過程中最複雜的反應。此演講將介紹如何從好奇而進入此領域,並從醣化反應之基本化學問題出發,發展新的化學與酵素合成方法與工具以供探討生物之醣化機制及其對蛋白質修飾及功能之影響。同時也介紹新發展的分子探針及醣晶片,應用於尋找正常與疾病細胞表面上醣分子之差異,並由此差異設計針對傳染性疾病及癌症之廣效疫苗及新治療藥物。

From Sustainable Development to Healthcare Industry 從永續發展談健康產業 |
This lecture will start from the sustainability point of view to explore the impact of human scientific activities on the environment and human health, and the challenges facing us. It will also discuss how to select important key problems for research and how to develop a solution to the problem associated with diseases and at the same time improve our health, environment and economy.
本演講將從永續發展的角度出發,探討人類的科技活動所造成的環境問題,並從健康的議題去瞭解目前人類所面臨的挑戰;同時討論在進行研究的過程中,如何選擇重要問題加以深入研究以瞭解問題的根本,並研發出解決問題的方法以達到克服疾病、促進健康、改善環境及提升經濟的目標。
